When to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

October 21, 2026 2 min readBy Jared Marquez· NEE Marketing Manager

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system. When it starts struggling, the signs are usually there long before anything fails — you just have to know what to look for.

Why panels need upgrading

Most panels installed 25 to 40 years ago weren't designed for the way we use power today. EV chargers, mini-splits, hot tubs, and modern kitchens all pull more than a 100-amp service can comfortably handle. A panel upgrade isn't just about adding capacity — it's about safety, reliability, and bringing your home up to current code.

Common signs it's time

  • Breakers trip frequently, especially when multiple appliances run at once
  • Lights flicker or dim when the AC or refrigerator kicks on
  • The panel is warm to the touch, or you smell a faint burning odor
  • You're planning a renovation, addition, or EV charger installation
  • Your home still has a fuse box or a panel under 100 amps

What the work involves

A panel upgrade replaces your main service panel and, when needed, the meter and service entrance cable. We coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnection, pull the permit, and schedule the inspection so everything is done to code and on record with your municipality.

Free estimates on installations. Panel upgrades qualify for a free, upfront estimate — we'll walk you through the scope and the cost before any work starts.

Planning for the future

If you're adding solar, an EV charger, or a backup generator, the panel is the place to start. Sizing it right the first time saves you from doing the work twice. We'll look at your current loads, your planned additions, and recommend a panel that gives you headroom for the next decade.

When to call a licensed electrician

Any work inside a panel is licensed-electrician work — it's not a DIY project. If you're seeing any of the signs above, or you're planning a project that will add load, give us a call. We serve Egg Harbor City, Toms River, and the surrounding South Jersey communities.
